Coast Tour of beautiful Northern Germany (9 days)

Fine white sandy beaches, romantic bays, languorous islands - Nature lovers will feel right at home in Northern Germany where the roads lead to unspoiled landscapes and often right to the sea.

Day 1 - Arrival Hamburg

Arrival at Hamburg Airport. Transfer from the airport to the hotel.

Day 2 - Rostock

Today we will continue to Rostock to visit the Baltic Sail (11th – 14th August 2011). Traditional Sailers and Museum Ships will be the heart of the program for the one million visitors, as it has been the case ever since the first Sail in 1991, shortly after Reunification.
Besides sailing- and flying trips, Rostock’s port and Warnemünde’s docks offer a line-up with countless events. One of them is the scenery of half a dozen replicas of cogs to give an insight in the Hanseatic Times.

Alternatively we will visit the former Federal Horticultural Area, Rostock Zoo or we take time to visit the almost 800 year old Hanseatic town center of Rostock. The vibrant and cosmopolitan university and port town has a historical centre with typical north German brick architecture and a tangible maritime atmosphere.

Day 3 - Rostock - Wismar - peninsulas Fischland/Darß/Zingst - Stralsund

Depart from Rostock after breakfast to drive to Wismar, World Heritage Site of the UNESCO. The Hanseatic City of Wismar is a lively Hanseatic city at the Baltic Sea with all its interesting sights , monuments of building and culture - with monuments of Gothic brick architecture, cafés and restaurants. Visit the historic old town - one of the best preserved medieval town centres in Northern Germany, the Gothic brick architecture, carefully refurbished residential houses, the „Wasserkunst“ – a renaissance welling house right in the centre of the market place, the impressing classicistic city hall, the baroque fortress buildings from Swedish times. A visit to the historic city museum „Schabbellhaus“ is also a tour through one of the most important bourgeois renaissance buildings of Mecklenburg.

We continue to the picturesque peninsulas Fischland-Darß-Zingst at the Baltic Coast. They offer one of the most beautiful and varied coast areas in the region of the Baltic Coast. Afterwards we drive on to Stralsund, also a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO with the Brick Gothic historic centre, the Old Town with the Old Market Square and the Gothic Town Hall (13th century). Behind the town hall there is the imposing Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas' Church). The square is surrounded by houses from different periods, including the Gothic Wulflamhaus and the Baroque Commandantenhaus, seat of the old Swedish command headquarters. Visit the Jakobikirche (Saint James's Church) and the Marienkirche (Saint Mary's Church). From the octagonal tower (104 meters high) you have a magnificent view of Stralsund and the neighboring islands of Rügen and Hiddensee. We will visit the Katharinenkloster (Monastery of Saint Catherine) with its two museums (a museum of history and an oceanography museum). The ancient refectory of the monastery is one of the most spectacular Gothic interiors in Germany.

Day 4 - Lübeck

After breakfast departure to Lübeck. The most famous citizen is the poet Günter Grass, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The city's full name is Hansestadt Lübeck (hanseatic city of Lubeck) in memory of its history, where it has been important part in the Hanseatic League. Through ist Brick Gothic architectural heritage, Lübeck is on the UNESCO´s list of World Heritage Sites. The architecture of the city and the region as well is influenced by this historic period. Visit the famous marzipan industry and enjoy the delicious marzipan bread. Lübeck's sights are mostly within the Old Town, Along the way, you will visit Lübeck's historic churches, including the Marienkirche (the world's tallest brick church) and the Petrikirche, where you can ride an elevator up to a viewing platform 50 meters or 164 feet above the city's rooftops. Town Hall. See the Holstentor and the Baroque Buddenbrook House.

Day 5 - Stade - Cuxhaven - Bremerhaven - Bremen

In the morning departure for our next stop Stade with the historic Old Town. We will continue to Cuxhaven which is home to an important fisherman's wharf. Continue to Bremerhaven to visit the main attractions: the German Emigration Center and the German Maritime on the historical harbour with many museum ships. Next stop is Bremen, the Free Hanseatic City with an old tradition of trade and seafaring. See the picturesque market place with the statue of "Roland", the city hall, the cathedral and the Old Town.

Day 6 - Hamburg

Today we enjoy a city tour including all the main sights of this impressive city like the Michel, Reeperbahn, Alster and many more before discovering Germany´s largest sea port on a harbour cruise. The evening is free for own activities maybe a walk through the Reeperbahn.This amusement quarter originally was visited by sailors who were able to spend a whole 6month pay in only one happy night. Nowadays, of course, you can also seemore "civilised" areas.

Day 7 - Hamburg

After breakfast we visit the very popular annual city festival in Hamburg which takes place around the Alster lake. Between the market-square in front of Hamburg’s City Hall and the Lombardsbridge (Lombardsbrücke) you will see many attractions and performances from over 500 notational and international artists, acrobats and athletes. Over Hamburg’s four day summer festival there will of course also be a lot of delicious food. The every day, at about 10 pm, highlight of the Alstervergnügen is the show of the fireworks.

Day 8 - Timmendorf Beach - Travemünde

In the morning departure for our next stop Timmendorf Beach. Discover the longest beach in Schleswig-Holstein.
Afterwards we continue onward to Travemünde. Visit the Kaiserallee which is well-known for its linden trees, one of Travemünde's landmarks. All in all you can find 1.014 of these broad-leaved trees which are box-shaped; at Kaiserallee there are 605 of these linden trees - many of which are around 120 years old. Then walk down to the water back into the direction of the boardwalk. Pass by the beautiful 5-star Columbia Hotel Casino Travemünde and you will see the Brügmanngarten on the right hand side. In warm summer nights guests have the possibility to listen to concerts and watch movie performances. Visit the international and gorgeous festival Baltic Sail with lots of German tradition. Get the chance to explore the last big German windjammer “Passat”. The ship is Travemünde's pride and has an exciting history to tell. The four-masted barque PASSAT was completed in 1911 by Blohm & Voß in Hamburg for the shipping company Ferdinand Laeisz and completed the family of famous Flying-P liners. During its long service as a windjammer, the Passat sailed Cape Horn no fewer than 39 times and circumnavigated the globe in 1932 and 1948. The Passat has been anchored in the Travemünde port since 1960 and has since become one of Travemünde's famous landmarks.
