Altenberg Cathedral (1 day)"The brother of Cologne Cathedral" |
On the western outskirts of Naturarena Bergisches Land, located in the community of Odenthal, Altenberg Cathedral sits enthroned. The region is one gigantic nature reserve. It stretches from Wuppertal in the north to the fringes of the Westerwald forest in the south.
The impressive gothic building Altenberg, called „the brother of Cologne Cathedral“ is part of a Cistercian abbey founded in 1133. Duke Adolf IV. von Berg laid the founding stone for the Bergisch Cathedral on 3rd March 1259. The glazing of the western window, installed around 1400, represents the heavenly Jerusalem. It is also the biggest church window north of the Alps. The window was re-turned to its original place in 2005 after being restored for many years. Each year the cathedral hosts more than a hundred concerts.
